study
is this what
They want us to do?
Do they expect us to bend our heads
Like good little girls and
STUDY?

Do they expect us to have flying colours
AND
get into college
AND
get into university
AND
get a good job?
Yes, they do.

What do we do?
Be like good little girls or
REBEL?
If we don't obey
what would happen?
Nothing much.

Under someone's thumb
For
        Too
                Long.
Can't resist even
If we want to.
Are we weaklings?
Yes, Ma'am.
No, Sir.
Thank you very much.

So we obey,
So we be good girls,
So we study,
And suffer silently.
Bottling everything up,
Till it spills out,
Explodes,
And out flows long-hidden
Secrets
and
Grudges.

And they think us crazy.
Crazy world.
Silly pressure.
But they are all there,
And we are all here.
Do we tolerate?
Do we take this lying down?
Yes.
Sigh.
Don't mind me.
I know not what I speak.
But do you?

chiiyo's comments :
*smile* I remember this poem well... this was what I consider my first real poem, written back in early 1999. My poems back then were all long in length and short in breath... and rather varying in depth. This particular one was angry in tone too. You can definitely see a big difference between my writing style then and now. I just don't feel that kind of high intensity irritance anymore. Neither do I feel the same way about studying anymore. Some of my old resentment about the basic flaws of the system still haunt me, but on the whole, my outlook on studying has definitely changed quite a bit these four years that have passed...
